Let us tell you more about what the profession entails...

What is a Chartered Accountant?

Chartered Accountants are contracted by organisations or private clients to audit accounts, provide financial advice and undertake accounts administration.

Chartered Accountants are employed by private firms of Accountants, industrial organisations or within the public sector. Their work entails: preparing accounts and tax returns; auditing financial information; giving financial advice; dealing with insolvency cases; meeting and interviewing clients; compiling, analysing and presenting information; writing reports.

Qualification as a Chartered Accountant takes at least three years, during which time trainees work towards the ICAEW (or ICAS, ICAI or equivalent) professional qualification. Up to 15 hours of study each week is necessary in addition to full-time employment to ensure all exams are successfully passed. Once qualified however, promotional prospects are excellent.

Graduates from any academic background can train as a Chartered Accountant, but should have an excellent record of academic achievement, including 5 GCSE passes at grades A-C (Maths and English are essential), good A level results (22-24 UCAS points) and an Honours degree (2:2 or above).

Good analytical and numerical ability is crucial. Some firms prefer graduates with a degree in a mathematical or business subject. Employers look for evidence of good oral and written communication skills, self-motivation and the ability to work as part of a team. Previous experience is unnecessary, although many employers offer vacation courses, workshops and placements which can give a useful insight into the profession.
